Guy Style: Suit Up

When it comes to menswear and swim trunks, we’ve reached a consensus over here at A Chic Critique: classic always wins. Although board shorts and hawaiian prints are constantly trending, streamlined, simple cuts in primary colors are what I like to see. Think reds, blues/navy, golden yellows and hunter greens.

Some of my favorites picks for all those hot days by the water:

Mr. Prepster. Boating or yachting around the coast, anyone? Chucs Printed Swim Shorts, $250

Mr. Take It Easy. Polo Ralph Lauren Traveler Volley Swim Shorts, $75

The Guy Next Door. A casual, loose fit perfect for lounging poolside or grilling out at the lake. Vilebrequin Morea Mid-length swim shorts, $170

The Vacationer. Classic cut + a print full of personality. Orlebar Brown, Graphic Print Swim Shorts, $215

The California Boy. Bold, bright and athletic. Polo Ralph Lauren Swim Shorts, $77.78

What’s your swim trunk personality? More of a surfer dude, or a country club cronie?

Looks sharp, guys.

Bow Tie Love

What comes to mind when you think of bow ties? Charming. Quirky. Smart. Preppy. Whatever adjective you might use to describe these timeless neckties, it can’t be argued that they remain a classic style staple for men.

Photos via: the Sartorialist; trendycrew; flickr; sebastian; suitupplease; 500daysofbowties; dollydotgirl; fashion indie

What I find most appealing about bow ties is how versatile and adaptable they are to a man’s lifestyle and sense of style. Regardless of your fashion aptitude, the bow tie you wear is indicative of your personality and preferences. Are you the bookish, intellectual type? Artsy and eccentric? Conventional and old-school? Perhaps you scorn trends and gravitate towards the basics.

The consensus here at A Chic Critique is that bow ties are a major do – at a wedding, for work, for play, for a date, for a show, for studying, dates, and derby days. I love one paired with a formal, fitted suit, or worn casually with a blazer and jeans; I also think they look cool and effortless paired with suspenders. However you style them – uptown businessman, or downtown hipster – don’t try too hard. Let the bow tie simply enhance your attire, not overtake it.

J. Crew Thin Stripe Bow Tie, $49.50

Polo Ralph Lauren Handblock Bow Tie, $70

Carrot & Gibbs Silk Bow Tie, $59.50

Brooks Brothers Link Print Bow Tie, $55

Blending modern sensibility with old-school style: that’s a bow tie for you.

Look sharp,

5 Pairs of Shoes Every Man Should Own

Dear men,

I must insist that you take a look at your closet and honestly evaluate your lot: do you see these five pairs of shoes? If not, it’s time you consider expanding and making these essentials part of your wardrobe. If you’re a living, breathing, warm-blooded man, it’s imperative you have these foundational & versatile basics in your closet. No excuses.

1. Brown Wing Tips

Crockett & Jones Clifford Wing-tip, $695

Don Draper, eat your heart out. Wingtips are the crux of a businessman’s wardrobe! Sophisticated, handsome, and uber-professional, these shoes mean business. Look for a well-constructed, quality leather pair; and avoid the temptation to skimp on these. You’ll be able to wear these with black & navy trousers, making them well-worth the investment.   Your brown pair should be supplemented with at least an additional pair, as well as a black pair.

2. Black Oxfords

Johnston & Murphy Georgetown II Cap-toe, Black Leather, $375

If you take care of your oxfords – keeping them polished & pristine – these shoes will carry you through every formal function, whether it be a black-tie wedding or a funeral. The cousin of the wingtip oxford, black leather oxfords are the perfect compliment to a well-tailored dress suit.

3. Loafers

Cole Haan Air Lorenzo Penny, $328

What screams business casual more than a loafer? Pair with khakis and a button-up for a less-structured, laid-back environment: date night, ‘casual Fridays’, dinner with the parents. You should already own a pair – and if you don’t – make that a priority, as soon as possible. All-American style right here, guys.

4. Casual Boots

Cole Haan Paul Chukka, $198

Every man needs a great-looking, casual pair of boots. Comfortable, durable, and stylish, these so called “dessert-boots” should make their way into your conscious. Invest in a black leather pair for work (remember to keep them polished), and have them easily transition from day to night. Another option? Brown suede boots are synonymous with “dressy casual.”

5. Sneakers / Running Shoes

New Balance 993, $89,99

Running errands, road trip, or grilling out with the guys on a Saturday – regardless, compliment your everyday sportswear (or Saturday best) with a pair of classic, sturdy sneakers.

Honorable Mentions / Seasonal Shoes

Sperry Top-Sider (the prepster’s casual shoe of choice for summer & ACC favorite) :

Classic Suede Bucks (pair with dark jeans or khakis, perfect for a “dressy casual” look) :

Cowboy Boots (ruggged & practical, “Marlboro” man style) :

Hip & Handsome Gifts For Him

A few of A Chic Critique’s picks for all the men in your life this holiday season:

Saddle Leather I-Pad Cover, $59

Instead of suggesting the ubiquitous I-pad as a gift for the gadget-techie-lover in your life (oh, and it’s a great gift, trust me), I’m going to suggest it’s counterpart and companion. Sleek, handsome & preppy, this case is the perfect compliment to one such toy.

Saks Fifth Avenue Men’s Collection Cuff Links & Money Clip Set, $178

A set of classic cuff links are a welcome addition to any man’s wardrobe.

Weston Leather Cigar Case, $73

For the cigar-aficionado in your life.

Audio Technica Record Turntable, $225

Now your hipster, die-hard musician (or collector) has a cool place to play his ever-growing, extensive collection of vintage vinyl records.

Wolfgang Puck Reversible Grill & Griddle, $109

The grillmeister in your life will be thanking your for this portable Wolfgang Puck grille – makes gameday grilling with the guys easy, fun & delicious.

TAG Heuer “Grand Carerra” Automatic Chronograph Watch, $5,900

Perfect for the fashion-conscious, metrosexual male in your life who appreciates the finer things and has an eye for sophistication.

Paul Stuart Nigel Herringbone Phineas Cole Shirt, $228

If he’s allergic to the mass appeal of Brooks Brothers, he’ll love Paul Stuart’s English aesthetic. The fit of the Phineas Cole line shirts is trimmer, cleaner -and- the collars are cutaway.

Rubicon Estates Rubicon 2006 Vintage Notes ($145)

The winery formerly known as the Neibaum-Coppola Winery is renowned for it’s flagship wine – the Rubicon. The vintage is great, described as having a flavor that is “big and berrylike, with a round finish that trails on forever.” Perfect for your wine-snob father-in-law (or father).

Happy shopping – only 12 more days to get it done!

Stay chic,

Annie

Watchmen

I’ll be honest: I’m not much of a “watch” girl. Never have been. These days, all the “utilitarian” reasons for buying a watch seem obsolete with the advent of I-phones & blackberrys (who needs a watch to find the time?). However, I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you how much I am swooning over this year’s menswear watches.  Chunky, substantial, and handsome, these watches are the antithesis of dainty and “girly.” I’m particularly drawn to the oversized faces and chain links, and I find the crystal & diamond detailing (on some) a subtle, feminine touch to an otherwise masculine look.

Marc Jacobs Glitzy Henry Chronograph Watch, Gold, $250. This MJ watch is simply exquisite, and you can’t go wrong with classic gold. I’ll add this to my holiday “favorites” list.

Michael Kors Silver Round Chronograph Watch, $225

Michael Kors Rose gold-plated Stainless Steel Watch, $250 (My favorite MK rose-gold watch is encircled with Swarovski crystals! See it here at Bloomies.) I love how versatile and unexpected the rose-gold color is ; flattering on a variety of skin types!

Michael Kors Jet Set Sports Watch, Gold, $250

These menswear-inspired watches might have just converted me into a watch-girl. Add one to your holiday wish list this season!

Stay chic,

Annie

Mad for Plaid

Guys, you didn’t think I had forgotten you, did you? I’ve had a few menswear posts brewing for a while, but am just now getting to one. This is actually an androgynous article: get ready.

One of my favorite inspirations for fall fashion this year comes from Tommy Hilfiger’s Fall/Winter 2010 ad campaign – it’s the embodiment of classic American sportswear. These editorial shots showcase some of this season’s salient trends: cozy knitwear, tailored menswear for women, rich tones, camels & neutrals, and plaid.

Easy, effortless luxury.

All images via TH ad campaign for Fall/Winter 2010.

LOVE THIS photo. Intro to Fall/Winter 2010 menswear.

One of my last menswear posts was on camel coats. The perfect compliment to one such coat? A plaid shirt.  Rugged, yet timeless, plaid is preppy & handsome. If you’re not the preppy type, guys – never fear – it’s all in the styling (for those that have an urban, more hipster leaning). Whether you prefer to pair yours with jeans & a sports coat, khakis & a navy cashmere sweater, or skinny jeans & Chucks, you can’t go wrong with plaid.

My plaid shirt picks for all you men:

Gap Blue + white 2-pocket shirt, $49.50
Diesel Plaid Workshirt, $120
With camel patches on the elbows? YES, please. Ralph Lauren Rugged Plaid Workshirt, $139.99

This look goes both ways, and that’s why I love it so much. Ladies, a plaid shirt + jeans + riding boots = classic. My picks for the belles:

ON Women’s Classic Flannel Shirt, $24.50 (tried it on, a great look for less!)
Banana Tall Flannel Ruffle Shirt, $69.50
Etoile Isabel Marant Cotton/Wood Blend Plaid Shirt, $280

Put me in a plaid shirt, jeans & boots, a cozy camel scarf and plop a puppy in my lap. Add a vintage Jeep Wagonneer? I’m at home.

Stay chic,

Annie

Menswear: Camel Coats

A classic camel coat should be the crux of a man’s wardrobe. Handsome, regal and refined, a camel jacket is timeless and versatile, especially during the cooler months.

Gucci, $2,790, available at select Gucci stores, 800.456.7663 and www.gucci.com . From Fall 2010 Gucci show (above).

Fortunately, you no longer have to buy a coat that’s made 100% out of camel hair (which hikes up the price). Now you can find more affordable camel-colored coats at places like Club Monaco or J.Crew. I love this cool, casual corduroy blazer from Banana Republic for $198.

Garrison Wool Sport Coat, $1450, from Ralph Lauren
Two-Button Camel Sports Coat from Brooks Brothers, $548. 100% camel hair.

For a business meeting or boardroom, pair your camel coat with a button-up, coordinating tie, and a neutral slack or trouser pant (browns, deep grays, etc.). For a more casual, weekend look (or for a youthful look that’s less corporate), pair with jeans and a button-up, or over a sweater.

Jim Moore, menswear consultant for GQ magazine says (about the right shade of camel):

“Get the right shade: butterscotch, rather than overly reddish or caramel-colored—and you’ll have a piece that’s perfect for both the office and the weekend this fall.”

Look sharp this fall, guys.

Guy Style: Top-Siders

The Sperry Top-Sider is the summer shoe for any guy – I find myself recommending these to men all the time! A classic casual shoe, the Top-Sider is not just for “dads” anymore. Versatile, polished and preppy, this ‘boat shoe’ can be worn to virtually any summer function, whether it be a poolside barbeque, outdoor concert, or dinner date.

Sperry Top-Sider® ‘Authentic Original’ Canvas Boat Shoe, $69.95
Men’s Authentic Original Boat Shoe, $75
Men’s Authentic Original Seasonal Boat Shoe, $85

So what do you wear them with?

Go casual with these J.Crew Stanton shorts and a short-sleevved pique polo shirt, such as this or this. Don’t be hum-drum predictable in white! Go for a salmon-colored chino or a pink shirt: I dare you. Try dressing your Top-Siders up (and look handsome on that date) with flat-front chinos from J.Crew and a linen polo button-up or oxford from Ralph Lauren. Add a preppy belt and you’re dressed to impress!

I admit it: I’m a sucker for a man wearing boat shoes. Yes, please.

Look smart, guys.

The Gingham Girl

Clockwise, from top left: Blue Gingham Top, $39.99, via Gap; A.P.C. Madras Checked Navy Gingham Tunic, $120, via Lagarconne; Steven Alan Gingham Shirt, $160, via Net-A-Porter; Pink Gingham Cotton Top, $120, via Net-A-Porter

I can’t get enough of this cute cotton woven fabric! Once used for pattern-making material on dress forms, this iconic print has made appearances in the likes of Dorothy’s famous frock and Bridget Bardot’s wedding dress. What goes around comes around, right?

Gingham is the perfect summer fabric because it’s lightweight, breathable and low-maintenance. So how do you wear it (and keep from looking like a farm girl or a walking tablecloth)?

1. Keep accessories sweet and simple. Think flats or sandals.

2. Pair a gingham blouse with solid, classic basics, such as crisp, white jeans (my personal pick) or khaki shorts. Steer clear of pieces like cut-off denim shorts/skirts so as to avoid looking like you’re wearing a costume.

3. Reserve gingham for more informal outings – errands, lunch-date, barbeque.

4. Be mindful of the print. Larger checks will make you appear larger, so use sparingly.

Note – Lauren Conrad pulls off the look well by pairing this sweet gingham wrap dress with flat thong sandals and a simple white headband. Accessories are minimalistic. Image via Fab Sugar

You can also be a gingham guy. Want to look polished and preppy, but still feel cool & comfortable? Try a lightweight gingham button-up this summer. Pair with jeans or khakis and your look is instantly pulled-together! Here are some of my favorite picks:

Fine Slim Custom-Fit Gingham Shirt, $125.00, via Ralph Lauren
Secret Wash Shirt, $59.50, via J.Crew

Stay chic,

Annie

Meet Chambray (Denim’s Cousin)

Denim’s lightweight cousin Chambray has come to stay for spring and summer months. Usually reserved for menswear, this tightly-woven light-to-medium wash cotton fabric is making an appearance in women’s styles as well, one being the classic button-up. This unisex fabric is best paired with khaki or white (tip to both guys & dolls: refrain from pairing chambray with denim).

Women can wear chambray a few different ways – as a jumper, button-up shirt, top, or skirt. One great way to incorporate chambray into your wardrobe is to update the denim mini (chambray being a little dressier than denim). A chambray shirt can be worn buttoned, or unbuttoned over a graphic print or embellished tee, then paired with khaki shorts or white jeans, for a classic, all-American look that is both chic & current.

Washed Chambray Shirt, $59.50 via Gap

Rosa Cha Runway Chambray Dress, $550 via Shopbop
Madewell the Perfect Chambray Shirt, $68, via Shopbop

The same goes for men: unbuttoned or buttoned, chambray shirts are stylish, lightweight and perfect for summer. Paired with stone or khaki pants or shorts, the look can easily be laid-back and casual, or sleek and put-together, depending on how you style it.

Tommy Bahama Denim “Hatch it Out” Shirt, $88, via Nordstrom

Shades of Greige Wrangler Denim Chambray Work Shirt, $97, via Revolve Clothing

Burberry Brit Chambray Shirt, $225, via Nordstrom

(As a general rule of thumb, refrain from pairing chambray with denim, unless it’s a grayer wash chambray with a very dark wash denim, pictured here. Khaki, stone and white are better options, in my opinion).

This is not chambray, but it’s a “pebbled chambray” leather color Marc Jacobs bag. So it counts.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Classic Q Hillier Hobo, $398, via Shopbop

Check out J.Crew and Gap for more affordable options. Try incorporating a chambray piece into your spring & summer wardrobe for a lightweight alternative to denim!

Stay chic,

Annie
