Brights of Spring

If you haven’t already gotten the March issue of Elle, I’d encourage you to: as the cover suggests, COLOR is back for spring! Although 70’s neutrals and sheer whites are also on the horizon for warmer weather this year, spring collections are replete with pops of bright, bold colors – fuschias, neon pinks, lemon and citron yellows, turquoise and teal blues.

Miss Katy Perry looking fierce and glamorous on the March cover of Elle (note the combination of two dominant trends for spring: 70’s and color). Talk about being a “firework.”

Jewel tones and brights are uber-flattering on a multitude of skin tones. Neon pinks and citron yellows look fantastic and stunning against dark complexions. Medium to olive skin tones will notice that deep, rich jewel tones (emerald green, plum, teal) instantly brighten your appearance. If you have fair skin, purples and coral/bubblegum pinks, as well as true turquoises, will highlight your coloring and give you that “wow” factor. Color says: look at me!

100th Post: Feather Love

Today is ACC’s 100th blog-post! It’s exciting to look back over the last year at all the fun, fashion, and (according to a good friend) ‘chic-critiquing‘ occurred. Whether shopping & packing for honeymoons, making consignment trips, editing wardrobes, or beautifying a bride, I’ve been able to do what I love and am most passionate about: helping women of every age, shape, size, budget, and lifestyle look and feel beautiful. Get ready for another year of style-tips, “what NOT to wear” advice, trend reports, and ACC happenings along the way.

Onto today’s topic: feathers galore.

I often wear a pair of blue and green peacock-woven earrings I love, and surprisingly, have received more compliments on them than almost any other pair of earrings I own. I’m a self-professing “dangly-earring fanatic” by nature, so my collection continues to expand; however, this pair takes the cake. Half “where the wild things are,” and half “free-bird hippie,” feather jewelry reflects some of the most beautiful creatures in nature, but is simultaneously funky and glamorous. Unexpected and stylish.

Isabel Marant RTW (via Style) Love them? Here they are:
Swoon-worthy + feather +  pink = A Chic Critique hot-list for spring. Unfortunately, these bad-girls are sold out. I know – I’m a tease.

Like the look? If so, here are my favorites.

1. HaylBop Originals “Flock of Peacocks Earrings“, originally $49 – now $24.50!

2. Anthro Alabaster Peacock Earrings, $38

3. Aurelie 18-karat gold-dipped Swan feather earrings, $1,300

4. Ron Herman Feather Earrings, $75
5. Forever21 Festive Feather earrings, $4.80 (look for less)

Tribal Fever

It was love at first sight when I saw the Spring 2011 RTW collection from Tracy Reese this year. Playing on the ethnic trend other designers also nodded to this spring, she combined feminine, luxurious silks and chiffons with bold, eclectic tribal prints.

Boho-styling + Tracy Reese + tribal inspiration = yes, please.

Spring Florals Pt. 1: Frocks

Roses are red, violets are blue, flowers are nice for Valentine’s, but floral frocks are, too.

With spring just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about those “transitional” items in your closet. By transitional, I mean jackets, dresses, skirts, and tops that can easily be combined with a spring (or winter) item, thus making the outfit more “in-between-seasons” appropriate. With the weather gradually getting warmer – but still very cool – it’s important to think in terms of layers.

One such transitional piece? A lightweight, floral dress. Pair one with your go-to winter standards: tights, tall, slouchy boots (or flat riding boots), and a jean jacket or hip-length cardigan. As the weather warms up, ditch the tights, and the jacket/cardigan will provide the perfect amount of coverage for those cool, spring days.

Wear one of these :

a) Thread Social Floral Dress, $452 b) Eight Sixty Floral Print Dress, $84 c) Diane Von Furstenberg Mya Printed Kaftan, $195 d) Rebecca Taylor Floral Print Silk Dress, $295 e) Elizabeth and James Floral Print Dress, $395 f) Rebecca Taylor Sweet Pea Floral Printed Dress, $375

and pair it with this:

Current/Elliot “Majorette” Denim Jacket, $268.95 (I adore Current/Elliot jean jackets – timeless, cool, & sophisticated. You can’t go wrong with one).

or perhaps this:

J. Crew Infinity Cardigan (hip-length), $89.50 (the curry is so perfect for spring)

and a pair of these:

Frye Taylor Pull-on, on sale for $239.99

Keep wearing your winter boots and sweaters – but pair them with lighter, flowery dresses. Remember: think layers! Stay tuned for another post on florals for spring – they’re everywhere.

Stay chic,

Annie

ACC Skincare: The Clarisonic

ACC followers, meet The Clarisonic. If you haven’t already met, it’s time for a formal introduction; I highly encourage you to become friends.

After reading multiple positive reviews on various skincare sites, as well as conducting my own thorough research, my interest was beyond piqued. It’s an understatement to say the Clarisonic brush and cleansing system come highly recommended.

From the Clarisonic website:

While cleansing is the first step in any skin care ritual, it is often overlooked.  Typical manual cleansing can leave behind dirt and oil trapped in pores. This build-up can damage the appearance and health of your skin and keep your skin care products from working like they should.

Used and recommended by spas and dermatologists, Clarisonic Sonic Skin Cleansing Systems use a patented sonic frequency of more than 300 movements per second to gently, yet thoroughly remove 6X more makeup and 2X more dirt and oil than cleansing with your hands alone. Cleaner skin is the first step toward healthier skin. And healthier skin is smoother, more radiant and more beautiful.

  • Removes 6X more makeup than manual cleansing
  • Leaves skin feeling and looking smoother
  • Removes impurities that keep creams and serums from working their best
  • Gentle enough to use twice a day
  • Reduces oily areas, dry skin patches and blemishes
  • Minimizes the appearance of visible pores

When I turned 27, I vowed that this would be the year to invest in quality skincare products and to really begin nourishing my skin. If you know me at all, you know I’m quite vigilant about my skin already, and have been for the last five years – moisturize, SPF 50, and exfoliate daily. While many of my friends in their 20’s are outside pursuing tans, I am more adamant about staying out of the sun, protecting my skin from damage and premature wrinkles.

I was delighted when I received the Clarisonic Pro Sonic Skin Cleansing System (similar to the Plus, but the Pro is only available for purchase through a physician’s office) for a Christmas gift this year.

Long-time users (as in, daily) insist that using the Clarisonic minimizes pore-size, improves the overall quality of your skin tone, and reduces the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles. What’s not to love? After using my Clarisonic Pro, I can attest to the fact that my skin is silky smooth, unbelievably clean, and shiny. I’ve only been using it six weeks, but have already noticed my pores have diminished in size. The vibrating brush spins in circles, cleansing and deeply massaging your face, almost as if you’ve had a soothing facial. This product also functions as a gentle exfoliant – perfect for clearing up those problem spots (blackheads, acne, etc.).

The Clarisonic “Mia” is also another option for those that want a smaller, travel version – perfect for those always on-the-go, active women. ($149)

You can use the Clarisonic with your own skincare products – cleanser, etc. – or you can purchase Clarisonic’s cleansing products, such as their Refreshing Gel Cleanser, Gentle Hydro Cleanser and Nourishing Care Cleanser (all of which I use and love).

Whether you’re 26, or 56, it’s never too late to begin taking care of your skin. Small changes in your skincare regimen can result in significant improvements in your skin’s appearance and texture. Here’s to nourishing, hydrating, and protecting your skin!

Stay chic,

Annie

The Clarisonic System can be purchased at Sephora, the Cosmetic Market, or online.

Spring Shoe Alert: Cone Heels

Fashion – by nature – is cyclical. Certain classics remain stylish wardrobe staples throughout the years; others revolve in and out of fashion by season, or even by decade.

For spring 2011, we’re seeing the appearance of cone heels yet again, much to my joy and excitement. Cone heels & platforms help diffuse the weight of your body and evenly distribute it along your foot. The result? A heel that’s much more forgiving and comfortable to wear. Wood heels and cork are still au courant, as is Fall 2010’s clog trend: think 1970’s with a modern twist.

1) Stuart Weitzman Codex Slide, $345

2) Nine West Alsace, $89

3) Franco Sarto Hot, $79

4) Jimmy Choo “Urban” Sandal, $395

5) N.Y.L.A. Poin, $59.99

6) DVF Flynn Platforms, $295

7) Michael Kors Dove Sandal, $98

Stay chic & happy Friday!

I Heart Valentine’s Dresses

The annual ‘day of love’ is just around the corner, and I’ve picked out some beautiful, flouncy, pink and pretty dresses that are perfect for the occasion.

Marchesa can always be depended upon to deliver loveliness: this sophisticated, floral-inspired strapless number is no exception.

Notte by Marchesa Ruffled Chiffon Dress, $795

Lady in Red: sweet, simple and flirty.

Alice + Olivia Tie Die Tank Dress, $295

Highlight your waist or hourglass figure with this satin frock . Jewel tones are flattering on most skin tones, and it just so happens they happen to be one of the dominant color palettes for spring 2011.

Thread Social Draped-Hammered Silk Dress, $495

The bib necklace detail gives an unexpected, trendy edge to an otherwise classic red dress.

Rebecca Minkoff Necklace Silk Dress, $429

Not interested in buying a brand new dress for Valentine’s? Not in the budget? Try renting – yes, renting – a dress from Rent the Runway. Peruse their expansive collection of designer and luxury gowns, cocktail dresses and party frocks, and then “rent” a dress for a fraction of the cost.

Like this Robert Rodriguez Black Label Sophisticated Merlot Dress – Retails for $650 – rental is only $75!

Or perhaps this sexy, sleek Hot Tamale Bandage dress by Herve Leger (this baby retails for $1,050, but you can rent it for a weekend for only $100). Genius.

Love it – wear it – return it.

Stay chic this February – and pretty in pink.

Annie
